Important Guidelines

Identification Requirements

The notary must confirm identity of the individual signing the document to be notarized or certified. This is done through examining acceptable forms of identification (ID). The following ID is acceptable, but must be current and not expired:

  • United States Passport
  • United States Passport Card
  • Certificate of United States citizenship
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Foreign passport
  • United States green card with photograph
  • State issued driver’s license
  • State issued identification card
  • United States military identification card

Documents Not Allowed to be Notarized

A Virginia notary public is not allowed to notarize the following documents:

  • Vital Records (birth, death, marriage, divorce, single status)
  • Marriage records issued by a Virginia Circuit Court
  • Virginia issued circuit court documents (divorce decree, name change, single status)
  • Virginia State Corporation Commission issued documents
